Understanding Pediatric Dentistry
When parents have questions or concerns regarding their child’s health, they most often call upon a pediatrician to answer their questions or to treat the child’s illness. In that same regard, a pediatric dentist should be a parent’s first choice as primary caregiver for their child’s dental health.
Just as a pediatrician has additional years of training tailored specifically toward children, pediatric dentists have also committed those extra years of education in the treatment of infants, children, adolescents, and children with developmental disabilities. Children have special needs, which may be more readily met by someone with this additional training. Such intense training is designed to provide oral health care in a comfortable atmosphere for children and to promote greater understanding of the oral growth and development of youngsters.
Timing of the first visit
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child be seen for a routine examination as soon as he/she has their first tooth, or around 1 year of age, whichever occurs first. This examination may reveal developmental problems or dental disease, which should be treated early. Also, there is much information of which parents should be aware in order to achieve and maintain the best possible oral health for their child. Information, such as proper diet, oral hygiene, and the use of fluoridated toothpaste will be discussed. Through early exposure to the dental environment, your child will become accustomed to such visits.
Children who are seen between the ages of 0-3 will most often be examined in the parent’s lap. As a child grows and becomes more comfortable with the office, the cleaning of their teeth, fluoride treatments, and x-rays will be initiated.
Fostering a child’s cooperation
It is normal for children to be afraid of anything new or strange. Most fear is a fear of the unknown. We try to remove the unknown by proceeding at a reasonable pace for the child’s age, and explaining everything we do in terms the child can understand. Do not be upset if your child is anxious on the first appointment or perhaps even the second. This is a normal reaction for most children. The key again is early exposure to the dental environment. This allows for proactive dentistry, which will greatly reduce extensive dental work and cost to you.

We have been with Dr. Poulos for 2 years now. He and his staff are amazing and kind, and very professional. Dr. Poulos is honest in diagnosing and treating his patients. His staff goes out of their way to make your child feel safe and comfortable. I wouldn't trust any other dentist with my children.
I brought my son in for a 6 month cleaning and exam. Couldn't be any happier. My son has a bit of anxiety when it comes to anything dental. Stacie did an outstanding job cleaning his teeth and being patent with him! Dr. Poulos always does a great job with him too. The staff is wonderful. I can't say enough awesome things about this group!!!
It was my daughters first visit to the dentist and she is still very young. She is 27 months old with a mouth full of teeth. Every single person in the office made us feel welcome and they were all extremely friendly. The Dr. was kind, gentle with Layla when she was a little afraid and very he was informative after the exam. We are very happy to have found such a wonderful place!! We highly recommend this dentist!!
Tyler has Autism which makes trips to the dentist difficult. Dr Poulos has seen Tyler a few times now and each time Tyler has been able to tolerate more of the cleaning procedure. Today he made it through the whole procedure. Dr Poulos does a great job and is very patient with kids that have disabilities.
Just making sure you all know just how much it means how awesome you are with Ruby! Means a lot to me the patience you have with her and how well she responds and the positive attitude she leaves with! :) Thank you all!"
Just wanted to say how amazing Dr. Ron and his staff are. What a group of kind and caring people. We really appreciate how smooth today went with Tyler getting his "bugs" fixed. Also, thank you for the supplies so that Tyler can practice being a Dentist!
Thanks again,
Emily Jones
Or. Poulos is always great with the kids, he is passionate and proactive about caring for our teeth. He has the most innovative equipment to make sure we have the best care. For example, today instead of creating cement models for braces, he used a 30 machine to take pictures of the kids mouths. I know this is the dentistry of the future and he is leading the way. If you are not sure about your dentist, I would check out Dr. Poulos! He and his staff are definitely the best!
It can be a challenge taking kids to the doctor. especially the younger ones. But, Dr. Poulos and his staff always make our visit easy and effortless. The kids look forward to their visits and the atmosphere helps maintain a relaxed feel.
Dr. Poulos and his staff are always excellent, kind and caring towards my children. I appreciate the kid-friendly terms they use to not frighten my kids. We love Dr. Poulos and his staff!
Dr. Poulus extracted of 2 my son's teeth. (not his first extractions from Dr. Poulus) As usual Dr. Poulus did excellent work and had a very calming manner with my son. He went above and beyond by leaving the office briefly to confer with our orthodontist down the hall about our son's continued therapy.
My kids LOVE going to the dentist because Dr. Poulos and his team are fantastic. Bringing a 4 year old, 2 year old and baby to the dentist office can be overwhelming, but the hygienists was so fun, engaging and helpful throughout our entire visit that it was enjoyable. Highly recommend.
Dr. Poulus is great with kids and explains everything so well to the parents. His staff is pleasant and helpful with scheduling or rescheduling. I'm really glad we found him.
